Sid Meier's Railroads! App Reviews

Classic

Probably the best railroad industry simulation game of all time. One problem… description mentions a "Train Table" mode - but I cant seem to find it in the menu anyhow.

Welcome Back Sid Meier RR!

This is a complex game with rewarding progress and great detail to accuracy. Tech issues have made it impossible to play on current PCs so here I am at MAC! I have been playing this game since it first came out with consist being shown in bubble above the stations - and i hoped that some upgrades would appear: such as a listing of products showing up in ways other than an exclamation point on the map; a warning from individual stations for whatever reason, and of course, current rails - ongoing upgrades of rails. Thank you! Great fun - take time to do the tutorial and be prepared for days spent riding the rails.

Okay but...

It is really neat out of all the train games out there. Graphics are good. However, there are too many bugs. The trains dont seem to follow any proper routing when there are lots of switchbacks available in order to avoid stoppage. And in the terrain editor way to many bugs and even though there is a warning, come on, get behind your product and fix them before you release it.

Would not recommend they dont fix anything.

This game is a rip off its not complete and they will not refund you so dont buy it. and if you post something negative they will always delete it and keep the positive ones,to get new people to buy it. Ive bloged this on the web for everytime they deleted my info. no fix for ver 1.0.1 its like they forgot how to program and would recommend you dont by from this company.

Amazing!

This is probably my favorite railroad simulation game ever the only thing it needs is for the scenarios to be larger!

Game is well done however it crashes often

This is a very good game, when it works. I have run the game for several months now and find that approximately every 5 - 8 plays it crashes, just dies and disappears requiring me to re-start the game from scratch.

Good Idea, not worth $30

Good idea for a game but is not the caliber one might expect from a sid meiers game. Once you get a hang of the game, it becomes pretty easy and boredom ensues.

Excellent game

Excellent Game, the port is great, but it does crash quite a bit (when loading some games and randomly). Fortunately the game loads fast and auto-saves every minute, thus disruptions are minimized.

Always Loved This Game…..BUT

The issues that plaugued this game on the PC seemed to have followed it to the Mac. Continual crashes. There isnt really a game like this out there so you sort of have to grin and bear it. Weekness aside, this game is great for a semi-mindless build and dominate strategy. To increase the replayability of he game focus on achieving the "Goals" and increasing the difficulty level.

Good game when it works

I used to love this game, but in El Capitan have about a 30% chance of it working (if I don’t click through the opening “Credit” animations). If you get to the animation with the trains, then you’ll have the game loaded no problem. I really wish they would fix this game though.

Great Game but multiplayer with people on Game Centre Doesn’t work

Great Game but multiplayer with people on Game Centre Doesn’t work.

Great game, wish I could play it

Since installing El Capitan, I cant get it to start. Would be nice to be able to play it again.

I like the Game, but buggy and crashes often on startup

They still haven’t fixed the bugs and many minor issues. Would be nice if they update it. Would be nice if they ever will. How about it Sid…. Please update asap and let us know if you are working on it or have decided to end it. Too bad and they don’t seem to acknowledge anything. Don’t buy until it fixed.

DO NOT BUY, it’s simply cheating

I bought this great game after watching some gameplay on YouTube. However it is impossible to play it on my mac. It crashes after 5-10 seconds. Tried every config combination and got no effect.

Невозможно запустить. Переустановка не помогает!

hmmm not satisfying…

I thinks this game is ok.. but its not worth $30… after playing two hours gets very boring… map is small… if i can i want refund...

terrible crashing problem

The game play on this is awesome for all those old sim city and previous railroad tycoon game fans. You wii absolutely love that part of it; however, the crashing part of this is one of the worse ever. Any game that lasts into the 1970s will absolutely crash unless you destroy all your trains (and even then you are most likely to get screwed). I wish I would have read the PC views for this before purchasing because crashing was a problem there. For a game 6 years old and $30 to own, you think they would have hammered that out before rolling out to the Mac. Not very encouraging so until they fix the crashing problem, dont waste your money.

Way too buggy

Im very disappointed. I was a big fan of the earlier Railroad Tycoon games, so I was hoping Railroads would be a worthy successor. But the game has so many bugs its just too frustrating to play - I feel gypped! Most significantly, there are pathing problems, so when I lay down tracks and build stations, I frequently find that I cannot make the trains run between the stations I had intended, even though the stations are connected in one continuous track. I just had to quit a game because I tried to run a train between three stations in sequence, but I couldnt save the route because the "OK" button was never enabled in the dialog box. Bizarre. Ive also had odd scrolling behavior, in that the scroll speed is inconsistent. I had to move it way up to be able to move around the screen, but then it would slow way down again sometimes randomly. I also had built some track right into a station, next to other track that was connected to the station. But the new track wasnt recognized as being part of the station, so I couldnt make a train stop there. Theres a lot of annoyances that make the game pretty much unplayable. From what Ive been able to tell, the game is dumbed down from the Railroad Tycoon 3 that I enjoyed immensely. Gone are local variances in commodity prices. You cannot run double-track, you just think you can with the button that lets you run a second track parrallel to the first. But its not truly double-track, since each train will only use one of the tracks, back and forth on the same line. So you simply cannot effectively run more than one train on any particular piece of track. Stupid!! I guess Railroads! is very popular on the PC so this didnt bother other people like it does with me, but a lot of the challenge of complex routing is gone if you can only run one train per track. Overall if they fix the bugs I guess I would keep playing a bit more. But I wish they would come out with a Mac-specific update that had the more complex game play from the predecessor games.

Disappointing

This is a great looking game and it runs well even on my MacBook Pro with Intel HD Graphics. That is why it is so disappointing that the game has some major AI shortcomings and a fairly small number of scenarios. If youve played any of the Railroad Tycoon games you are in for a rude awakening when you play Sid Meiers Railroads. The poor train AI means that it isnt practical to create continuous rail lines that span multiple cities. Instead, you have to segregate your trains so that each one has its own track and separate station slots. If you try to build out your train lines the way the game shows you in the tutorial youll end up with confused trains that get stuck at track interchanges and cause you to lose money as they sit there trying to decide what to do. There is also only a few traditional scenarios for you to play and you will quickly go through those and then wonder where the rest of the content went to. The game does provide several multiplayer focused maps which you can play in single player mode too but I dont find those nearly as interesting as the historically based traditional scenario maps. I bought this game because I really enjoy train tycoon games and Sid Meier is practically the founder of this genre but it ended up leaving me wishing there was a version of Railroad Tycoon 2 or 3 that was available for mac.

Great game!!

Tremendously fun game. Great update to the Railroad Tycoon game. The graphics are terrific. Ive spent many hours playing on my 2010 iMac and have yet to experience any of the crashing issues mentioned by previous reviewers. I do agree with a previous post that mentioned that sometimes track connections dont work as you expect. After a while, you get a feel for when this may happen. If I expect I will have difficulty with a connection, I save the game first and then attempt the connection. This is my only gripe and to me its a very minor issue. Five stars.
